One question we’re often asked is:
“How do I make a good impression when I talk to senior leadership?”
It’s a great question, because informal conversations with senior executives can often feel like high-stakes moments. You want to sound confident, concise, and credible… but also human.
If this resonates with you or your team, we’ve put together some practical advice based on our experience running sessions on “Talking to Senior Executives”. You can also watch our short videos on this topic below.
5 Practical Rules for Communicating with Executives
- Get to the point.
Busy executives appreciate clarity. Start with the “so what?”, what do they need to know? - Adapt your tone and level of detail.
Use a business-wide lens, not the day to day details. Frame what you say in terms of impact, not process. - Own your message.
Avoid weak language like “I think maybe…” or “I’m not sure but…”. Be clear and confident. - Bring in the bigger picture.
Connect your message to the company’s goals or strategy—show that you understand the context. - Leave space for dialogue.
Don’t flood them with information. Invite their perspective, and be ready to pivot.
